He has won numerous championships in all three of his sports. He is a mixed martial artist who fights in the Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Middleweight division, a former UFC Middleweight Champion. He has fought for the Glory Middleweight Championship title in kickboxing and is ranked #2 in the UFC men's pound-for-pound rankings as of August 23, 2022. Both offensively and defensively, Adesanya is widely regarded as one of the best strikers in mixed martial arts.

Adesanya is the eldest of five children and was born in Lagos, Nigeria.His mother, Taiwo, is a nurse, and Oluwafemi, his father, is an accountant. Adesanya was enrolled in the Taekwondo after-school club at Chrisland School, Opebi, until his mother removed him because of an injury. When he was 10 years old, he moved to Rotorua, New Zealand, where he went to Rotorua Boys' High School. During high school, Adesanya was not interested in sports; instead, he was interested in Japanese anime and manga like Naruto and Death Note. Adesanya attributes the bullying he endured in high school to his decision to pursue martial arts later in life.

He began training in kickboxing at the age of 18, inspired by the Muay Thai film Ong-Bak. Adesanya moved to Auckland, New Zealand, and began training in mixed martial arts under Eugene Bareman at City Kickboxing, with future UFC fighters such as Dan Hooker, Kai Kara-France and current UFC Featherweight Champion Alexander Volkanovski. Career in professional kickboxing: In May 2010, Adesanya defeated Tim Atonio by unanimous decision to begin his seven-fight winning streak. Before switching to mixed martial arts, his final kickboxing fight was a rematch with Alex Pereira at Glory of Heroes 7. After dropping Adesanya with a short left hook in the third round, Pereira won the fight by knockout.

Professional mixed martial arts career: Adesanya made his professional debut in mixed martial arts in 2012, defeating James Griffiths via TKO. He won the AFC Middleweight Championship at Australia Fighting Championship 20 by knocking out Melvin Guillard in the first round and the Hex Fight Series Middleweight Championship by knocking out Stuart Dare in the first round.

Ultimate Fighting Championship: Adesanya's contract with the UFC was made public in December 2017. On November 12, 2022, at UFC 281, Adesanya fought Alex Pereira, who had defeated him twice in kickboxing, in his attempt to defend his title for the sixth time in a row. Despite his initial dominance, Adesanya would ultimately lose the middleweight title to Pereira via technical knockout in the fifth round, his first defeat.
