Peter Obi finished his secondary school education at Christ the King College in Onitsha. He was accepted to the University of Nigeria in 1980, and in 1984, he earned a bachelor's degree with honors in philosophy.

Before entering politics, Obi was a businessman. Having claimed to have begun his life as a trader; being born into a trading family before entering the business world. In some private establishments, he held leadership positions.

Obi was a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance when he ran for governor in 2003, but his main opponent was wrongly declared the winner. Obi was declared the winner in 2006, after three years of legal battles, and took office in March 2006. On October 12, 2018, the People's Democratic Party's Atiku Abubakar announced that Peter Obi would serve as his running mate. On March 24, 2022, Peter Obi announced his intention to run for president of Nigeria under the platform of the People's Democratic Party. However, he later withdrew his announcement and announced that he would be running under the platform of the Labour Party instead.
