Peter Obi finished his secondary school education at Christ the King College in Onitsha. He was accepted to the University of Nigeria in 1980, and in 1984, he earned a bachelor's degree with honors in philosophy.

Before entering politics, Obi was a businessman. Having claimed to have begun his life as a trader; being born into a trading family before entering the business world. In some private establishments, he held leadership positions.

 

Obi was a member of the All Progressives Grand Alliance when he ran for governor in 2003, but his main opponent was wrongly declared the winner. Obi was declared the winner in 2006, after three years of legal battles, and took office in March 2006. In November of the same year, he was impeached, but the impeachment was overturned and he was reinstated in office in February of the following year. When Obi was removed from office during the 2007 gubernatorial election in Anambra State, the judiciary once more intervened and decided that he should be allowed to serve a full four years. He won a second term in office in 2010. Health care, education, and state finances all improved during Obi's tenure.

 

On October 12, 2018, the People's Democratic Party's Atiku Abubakar announced that Peter Obi would serve as his running mate. Obi opposed proposals for a standardized national minimum wage as a vice presidential candidate, arguing that different states should have different minimum wages. Abubakar/Obi ticket came second.

 

On March 24, 2022, Peter Obi announced his intention to run for president of Nigeria under the platform of the People's Democratic Party. However, he later withdrew his announcement and announced that he would be running under the platform of the Labour Party instead.
